BROWNSVILLE, TX. - María Luz Longoria Gómez (Luz), 95, June 13, 1926 - February 11, 2022; beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and great-aunt, entered into the glory of her eternal life on Friday, February 11, 2022, surrounded by caring members of her family.
Luz was preceded in death by her parents Paula Esparza and Francisco Longoria; her beloved husband, Santos G. Gómez; her sister, Angelita Gallegos Vázquez; her brothers Alfonso Gallegos, Tomás Gallegos, and Hilario Gallegos; and by her son, Santos (Tatay) Gómez, Jr.
Luz is survived by her sons, Joel (Kristin) Gómez, Daniel (Dora) Gómez, and Lionel (Mary Alice) Gómez; her daughter, Irene (Juan) Ybarra; her sisters Martina Montemayor, Irma Noyola, and Josefina Shuler; her brothers, Ramón Longoria and Frank Longoria; in addition to several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Luz was born in El Rincón de la Encantada, a pioneering community in Cameron County, and grew up beloved by her family and surrounded by caring aunts, uncles, and neighbors. Luz married her husband, Santos Gómez, while he served as a Sergeant in the U. S. Army Air Forces during World War II. When the war ended, Luz and Santos settled in Villa Cavazos, where they worked hand in hand creating a successful farm, ranch, retail and land development business. Luz deeply loved and cared for her five children and supported them in obtaining their education and throughout their adult life. In her later years, she also continued to embrace and care deeply for all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as all her parientes. Luz enjoyed a passion for reading and working on crossword puzzles. She enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, the 17th of February 2022 between the hours of one o’clock in the afternoon and nine o’clock at night, with a recitation of the holy rosary to begin at seven o’clock Thursday evening within the East Chapel of Darling-Mouser Funeral Home.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at ten o’clock in the morning on Friday, the 18th of February 2022 at San Pedro Catholic Church, 7602 Old Military Road, Brownsville. Committal services will then follow, via an escorted procession, at Ysidro Leal Memorial Cemetery, located at Leal Farms, 8250 U.S. Hwy 281, in San Pedro.
Serving as pallbearers will be Daniel Gómez Jr., Benjamin Gómez, Christian Rodríguez; George Lucio, Joe Polanco, and José Luis Meza. Honorary pallbearers will be Joel Gómez, Daniel Gómez, Lionel Gómez, and Juan Ybarra.
Luz will be greatly missed. Her legacy will continue through her family and friends and all the lives she touched through her friendship and caring. She gave thanks to God every day for her wonderful life and prayed for the well-being of all her family and friends.
