Mary Mimi Hasse, nee Ryan, passed away peacefully at St Lukes Baptist Hospital in San Antonio, TX, surrounded by her family on September 7, 2012.
Born in Oklahoma City, OK on November 11, 1927 to Joseph Thomas and Harriet Maloney Ryan, she was the second of four children. Mimi received a Bachelor of Arts in English from Oklahoma AM and later, an additional undergraduate degree in Education from the University of the Incarnate Word. After graduation, she held a journalist position at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. During this time, she met her husband of 20 years, Walter C. Charlie Hasse Jr. and they married on September 30, 1955 in San Antonio. The couple made their home in Corpus Christi, TX where Charlie practiced law for Humble Oil. Ten years and three children later, they moved to Brownsville, TX. In 1975, Charlie suddenly passed away and Mimi continued to raise their three children, teach, and actively participate in the community.
Notably, she was a dedicated English teacher starting at the original Brownsville High School and later moving to Homer Hanna High School where she taught until retirement. In 2008, Mimi moved to Independence Hill Retirement Community in San Antonio where she made many new friends and continued to pursue her interests. Mimi was a member of the Chi Omega Fraternity, Pan American Round Table II, and the Delta Kappa Gamma Society. She was also a devoted member of St. Mary, Mother of the Church in Brownsville and Holy Trinity Catholic Church in San Antonio. Her favorite pastimes included bridge, Bunco, theatre, politics, and especially literature, as she was an avid reader.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her sister, Margaret Moline and her brother, David Ryan.
She is survived by her sister, JoAnne Strother Tom son, Charles Tad Hasse of Brownsville daughters, Margaret Hasse Cowen and Joan Hasse Gerber Karl of San Antonio seven grandchildren, John F. Cowen, Jr. Robin, Benjamin Cowen, Andrew Cowen, Megan Cowen, Joseph Hasse, Lauren Cowen, and Rebecca Hasse and two greatgrandchildren, Grace Cowen and John F. Cowen, III. She was dearly loved and she will be remembered for her grace and dignity by her family and friends.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 12th with the rosary recited at 7:00 P.M. in the East Chapel at Darling Mouser Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 13th at St. Mary, Mother of the Church, 1914 Barnard Road. Committal services will follow at Buena Vista Burial Park.
Serving as pallbearers will be Andrew Cowen, Benjamin Cowen, John F. Cowen, Jr., Karl Gerber, Joseph Hasse, David Moline, Joseph Moline, and Leslie Totah.
