BROWNSVILLE, TX. – Mary Barreda Gómez passed into the hands of our Lord on Thursday, the 9th of February 2023 in the comfort of her Brownsville residence surrounded by her loving family. She was eighty-five years of age.
Mary was born in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico on September 20, 1937, daughter of Jose Angel Barreda and Rafaela Alba. She was a hardworking and vibrant soul. Mary worked as a bank teller for many years and obtained her Bachelor of Education degree later in life. She went on to teach at Hanna High School in Brownsville, Texas for over eight years and was highly regarded by her peers and loved by her students. Her favorite pastimes included gardening, listening to all types of music (especially Elvis Presley), playing lotería and poker games, gambling in Las Vegas, and spending quality time with her family.
Preceding Mary Barreda Gómez in death was her husband of sixty years, Ricardo Gómez Zamóra.
Survivors include four children Ricardo Gómez, Jr. (Rosie), Leonides Gómez (Hilda), Mary "Nina" G. Lopez (Jesus), and Alma L. Carrancho (Samuel +). She also leaves behind eleven grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, nine brothers and sisters, in addition to numerous extended family members.
The family is especially grateful to her dedicated and loving caregivers Emilia, Luci, Delia, Karina, and Dora.
Visiting hours will be held on Monday, the 13th of February 2023 between the hours of two o’clock in the afternoon and nine o'clock at night, with the recitation of the holy rosary to begin at seven o'clock Monday evening within the East Chapel of Darling-Mouser Funeral Home.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at ten o’clock in the morning on Tuesday, the 14th of February 2023 at the historic Immaculate Conception Cathedral, 1218 E. Jefferson Street, Brownsville. Interment will then follow, via an escorted procession, at Buena Vista Burial Park, 5 McDavitt Boulevard, Brownsville.
Honored to be serving as her pallbearers are Leonides Gomez, Richard Gomez, Jr., Jesse Lopez, Ricky Gomez, Leonides Gomez, Jr., and Nicholas Lopez.
Honorary pallbearers are Emilia Contreras, Luisiana Cantu, and Delia Chable.
