BROWNSVILLE, TX. – Matthew Gilmore Dodd peacefully passed away on Friday, the 4th of April 2025, in Brownsville, Texas at the Fox Hollow Acute Care Center.
Born in 1960 in Brownsville, Texas, Matthew was a graduate of James Pace High School.
He was preceded in death by his father, Franklin Smith Dodd, Sr. and his mother, Betty Pace Dodd.
Growing up in Brownsville, he was a competitive swimmer with the Blue Dolphin Aquatic Club competing at the state level and at Pace High School. The highlight of his swimming career was competing in the AAU Junior Olympics in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Many of his teammates remained lifelong friends.
A gifted woodworker, Matthew had a particular affinity for crafting with local Mesquite and Ebony. He was also an enthusiastic reader with a keen interest in the history of Brownsville.
Matthew worked at the South Texas Woodmill and served as a history tutor at Texas Southmost College along with other jobs throughout his life.
Matthew is survived by his brother, Franklin Smith Dodd, Jr.; his aunt, Mary Jo Phillips Pace; and numerous cousins, friends, and neighbors from Resaca Bend.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the caregivers at Fox Hollow, along with the friends who visited, especially Kathy Dempsey Bowling.
The Inurnment will be held at three o' clock in the afternoon on Saturday, the 26th of April 2025 at Buena Vista Burial Park, 5 McDavitt Boulevard, Brownsville.
In lieu of floral arrangements and customary remembrances, contributions in his memory may be made to the Brownsville Public Library, 2600 Central Boulevard, Brownsville, Texas 78520.
