Maude Terral Lette was born in Quitman, Mississippi, in March of 1913, to parents James Alexander Terral and Flora Neal Terral. Maude moved from Meridian, Mississippi to Brownsville, Texas, with her parents and brother and at age 16 entered Brownsville High School.
In 1936, when her paternal grandfather died, Maude returned to Mississippi staying for 3 years to care for her grandmother and to keep her grandfather's insurance business going. She attended and graduated from the United States Fidelity & Guaranty Insurance School in Baltimore, Maryland in 1939.
In September of 1939, Maude married Elmer C. Letter, Jr., and returned to Brownsville to live. Elmer and Maude had two sons, James Terral Lette of Brownsville, TX and Edward Leland Lette, of Spring Branch, Texas.
Maude worked for Dodd-Mitchell Insurance Agency of Brownsville for 14 years and in 1970, she started Lette Insurance Agency in which she remained active until 2015. She was a dedicated member and officer of Insurance Women of Brownsville.
During her life, Maude was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church and Faith Presbyterian Church serving as a Sunday school teacher and Elder.
Maude was an organizer of and served as the first president of the West Brownsville Garden Club, which is now 69 years old and doing well. Maude has been honored with a lifetime membership in Texas Garden Clubs, Inc.
In 1970, Maude joined Zonta International Club of Brownsville, who named her Woman of the Year in 2009. During her lifetime, she held various offices as was as president of the Club. She was also active in the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) for 25 years.
Preceding her in death are her parents, James A. and Flora N. Terral; her husband, Elmer C. Lette; a brother, Joseph E. Terral; and three great-grandchildren: Ricky, Ruth, and Maude.
Maude is survived by her two sons, James Terral (Alicia) Lette and Edward Leland (Karen) Lette and a step-son, E. C. Lette, III; 8 grandchildren: Michelle Lette (Steed) Mankin, Chantelle Lette (Chris) McGrath, John T. (Jane) Lette, James E. (Miriam) Lette, Ann (Doug Hansen) Lette, David T. (Christine) Lette, Marla Lette, and Rhoda Lette Winters; 8 great-grandchildren: Cole and Alan Mankin, Jennifer and Joshua Lette, Trevor Lette, Edward Gerusa, and Aiden and Dawson Lette; two nephews, William and Joe Terral; and a niece, Sally Terral along with numerous other extended family members.
Visitation will be held today, Thursday, Sept. 3rd from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the East Chapel at Darling-Mouser Funeral Home. A Memorial Service will be held at 12 Noon on Friday, Sept. 4th at First Presbyterian Church, 435 Palm Blvd. Private committal services will be held at Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens.
James Terral Lette, Edward Leland Lette, James Edward Lette, David Lette, Steed Mankin, John T. Lette, and Jonathan David Rocher are honored to be serving as Maude's pallbearers.
