Mellie Louise Newton

Mellie Louise Newton, 75, our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt entered into the glory of her eternal life on Monday, June 29, 2009 at Valley Regional Medical Center surrounded by her loving family.

A native and lifetime resident of Brownsville, Mellie was totally devoted and dedicated as both mother and father to her children. She was involved in PTA and served as president of the PTA at Resaca Elementary. Her devotion to family continued with her grandchildren and all their friends called her Grandma. She helped with numerous fundraising activities at both the elementary and middle school level for her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Lucille Lightbourne; her father, Arthur Bud Newton; and a brother, Arthur Sonny Newton.

Left behind to eternally treasure her memory are children: Lucille Lucy and her husband Hector Cascos and their children, Hafid Mtz. Cascos, and Havannah Alexa Cascos; Darlene and her husband Dr. Fernando Salazar and their children, Estephanie, Daniela, Asaad Salazar; Edwin and his wife Marylou Newton and their children, Byron Brianna Newton; and Earl Wayne and his wife Maggie Newton and their children, Victoria and Mellie Newton. She will also be dearly missed by the great-granddaughter that was the love of her life, Emma Sophia Guerrero; and her two beautiful sisters, Cornelia Newton Masso and Elizabeth Newton Givens.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 30, 2009 from 5 to 9 p.m. with the recitation of the holy rosary at 7:00 in the evening at Darling-Mouser Funeral Home. The Mass of Christian Resurrection is tentatively scheduled for 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 1, 2009 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 1200 Lincoln St., in Brownsville. Committal services will follow to Buena Vista Burial Park. Mellies sons, Edwin and Earl Wayne along with her sons-in-law, Hector Cascos and Dr. Fernando Salazar, and her grandsons, Hafid Cascos and Byron Newton, are honored to be serving as her pallbearers. Honorary pallbearer will be her grandson, Asaad Salazar.

Mellies family would like to extend their most sincere and heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Javier Jover for the dedicated care and compassion he extended to their beloved mother.
