Mr. Michael Begum, 86, died September 3, 2008, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Begum was born June 22, 1922, in Budslaw, Poland. Son of Feiga Fruma Taborisky Begum and Naum Begum.
As the sole survivor of his family following the Holocaust, Mr. Begum came to America in 1945, with the assistance of certain initiatives promulgated by Harry S. Truman and Secretary of State George C. Marshall. He arrived in Brownsville in 1950 and made Brownsville his home. Mr. Begum was active in the civic affairs of the city of Brownsville and was a faithful civic servant to the people. He was a beloved businessman and friend to the many who enjoyed hearing his endless jokes. He founded the New Yorker Stores Corporation, and operated his successful business for over 50 years. He lived a long and blessed life filled with inspiring stories of struggle and success. He was a devoted and loving father who took great pride in the accomplishments of his children. He will always be remembered, loved, and missed. His stories and perspectives on life will live on in the memories of those who knew him.
Surviving are his wife, Yolanda; his sons Alexander and Michael Jr., and his daughters, Sasha, Marsha and Alexandra Hernandez, and husband, Timo.
The celebration of life memorial will be held at 10:00 am, Friday, September 5th at Darling-Mouser Funeral Home, followed by the gravesite service at 11:00am. at the Hebrew Cemetery.
