Mimi Margot Dagwell Mccollum

BROWNSVILLE, TX. – Mimi Margot Dagwell McCollum, beloved mother and grandmother, journeyed into eternal rest with our Heavenly Father on Sunday, August 23, 2020, at 81 years of age.

Mimi was born in Denver, Colorado and eventually moved to Texas, where she graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School. She worked briefly for the State of Texas prior to marriage. She wedded Ernest W. McCollum, Jr. on January 22, 1966 and settled in Brownsville, Texas. She was employed with the Brownsville Independent School District for 27 years, bringing positive influences to the many lives she touched, while working with middle school students in special education.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest W. McCollum, Jr.; her brother, Charles “Charlie” Dagwell; her beloved aunt, Jean Curry Ogden; and by both of her parents and grandparents.

Mimi is survived by her daughter, Deanna Joyce Espinoza (Robert) and their children: Seth, Aaron and Elisabeth Marie, and also by a son, Ernest Charles McCollum. Additional survivors include Mimi’s beloved cousin, William “Bill” Ogden, his wife Becky, and their children, Kristi and Jason.

Mimi had the sweetest heart and a most loving soul. Her good-hearted and shy nature would easily win over people she would meet and her perceptive, sharp humor would always garner laughs. She would keep a bag of M&Ms in her skirt pocket as she adored chocolate, laughed at kitschy B-rated movies, savored delicious Mexican food along with her favorite soda, Dr. Pepper, and breathed a sigh of relief with the first cold front of the season in steamy South Texas as it meant that Christmas would soon follow and it would officially be her favorite time of the year. Despite all of these, her family always took first place in her heart. Mimi will be dearly missed by all who had the good fortune of knowing her.

Interment will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at a later date, where she will be reunited and laid to rest beside her husband. With her passing, we would like to bring attention and awareness to Alzheimer’s disease and the need for prevention and treatment for those individuals affected by it.
