Mittie Anita Pullam went home to Glory on the early morning of August 28, 2009 at Spohn Kleberg Memorial Hospital in Kingsville, TX. She was 98 years old.
Mrs. Pullam was born in Calvert, TX on May 24, 1911, but lived most of her adult life in Brownsville, TX. Her last place of residence was Corpus Christi, TX.
Mrs. Pullam earned a Bachelors Degree in Literary Arts from Samuel Houston College in Austin, TX and a Masters Degree in Education from Texas Southern University.
Mrs. Pullam was most known in South Texas for her historic achievement as the only African-American School Principal and the first African-American Teacher for the Brownsville ISD. Mrs. Pullam began teaching in Brownsville in 1947. She was selected Elementary Teacher of the Year in 1975, the year of her retirement.
Mrs. Pullam was recently honored for her 28-year contribution to the Brownsville ISD; a new elementary school has been built and named for her. Mittie A. Pullam Elementary opened this August and will serve up to 850 students, grades 1-6. Mrs. Pullam was blessed with the opportunity to visit the school and a few of the Pullam Cardinals on August 21, 2009.
Mrs. Pullam was the wife of the late Henry A. Pullam, Sr., formerly of Brownsville, TX. She is survived and loved by a host of family and friends, students and colleagues.
The home going service will be held at 2:00pm on Friday, September 4, 2009 at St. James Baptist Church in Brownsville, TX. The burial service will follow at Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens. The public visitation will be held on Thursday, September 3, 2009 at Darling-Mouser Funeral Home from 5:00pm-9:00pm; the wake will begin at 6:30pm.
