BROWNSVILLE, TX. – Murphy Virgil Jeffries, 75, former Shrimp Boat Captain, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, February 20, 2021, at Valley Regional Hospital in Brownsville, Texas. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army and served during the Vietnam Era. He was born in Guanaja, Honduras to Jessie Verla Parchman Jeffries and Virgil Murphy Jeffries. Murphy spent many of his days on the sea as a fisherman and working for oil companies. In his later years, he worked and eventually retired as a Security Officer. He enjoyed singing and playing the guitar with his sons and for his family and friends. Murphy now rests in the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Maria Elena Jeffries, 78, retired teacher of Brownsville Independent School District, went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, February 17, 2021, at Valley Baptist Hospital in Brownsville, Texas. She was born on May 09, 1942 in New Orleans, Louisiana to Maria Mercedes Colunga Gonzalez and Eleno Gonzalez. She resided most of her life in Brownsville, Texas where she was a faithful member of Livingway Family Church for over twenty years. She had a deep love for Israel, which she visited three times with her husband. She enjoyed spending time with her family, church family, and friends. Maria Elena now rests in the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Murphy Jeffries and Maria Elena were married on August 2, 1971 and went home to be with the Lord within three days of each other, a true testament of their deep love for one another.

They are survived by their children Richard Gabriel Jeffries, Murphy Virgil Jeffries Jr., and Kurt Steven Jeffries and his wife, Sona Marie Jeffries; their grandchildren Jesse, Christian, Darien, Jourdan, Destiny, Joshua, Christian T., Penelope, Judah, Siah, and Aviah; Maria Elena’s sister, Olga Rivera; and Murphy’s siblings, Eddie Jeffries and Linda Bodden.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, February 26, 2021 at Livingway Family Church, 350 W. Ruben M. Torres Sr. Boulevard, Brownsville, Texas 78520. Military honors are to be rendered at the church under the auspices of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2035 following the funeral service at 11:00 A.M. Interment will follow via escorted procession to Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery, 2520 Inspiration Road, Mission, Texas 78572 where they will be laid to rest together.
