Mrs. Noemi P. Cortez Carrasco, 90, our beloved mother, grandmother, and greatgrandmother entered peacefully into the presence of her Lord and Savior on Monday, January 4, 2010 at her residence.
A native and lifetime resident of Brownsville, Noemi alongside her husband Moises, were the owners and operators of the Palmetto Inn restaurants. In 1945, they opened their first Palmetto Inn on Palm Blvd. and Jefferson. The business grew to a chain of 12 all service restaurants and has continued for 65 years.
Noemi was best known for her charity work at Wesley Methodist Church and the Salvation Army Hogar de Nios in Matamoros. She was very active in the Ladies Circle known as Los Ayudantes at Wesley Methodist. One invitation by Noemi to help these children, turned into a 50 year ministry that is still in place.
Her joy each year, was to collect toys, food, and money to provide Christmas for the children at Hogar. The children would come and sing at church every year at Christmas time. Noemi made sure that each child received a new set of clothes and toys for the year. The generosity of Los Ayudantes touched not only the children at Hogar but thousands of citizens in Matamoros as well. In 2006, Noemi was the recipient of the highest honor bestowed by the Salvation Army in Mexico for her charity work in their country.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Moises M. Carrasco Sr., and by a son, Samuel David Carrasco.
Left behind to eternally treasure her memory are her children: Moises M. Maria Inez Carrasco Jr., Leo R. Luvinia Carrasco, Ruth Carrasco, Sylvia Carrasco, and Richard Jacqueline Carrasco 15 grandchildren, 14 greatgrandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, January 7, 2010 with a prayer service at 7 p.m. in the East Chapel at DarlingMouser Funeral Home. We ask that everyone meet at Wesley United Methodist Church, 1406 E. Austin St., Harlingen, TX for a 10 oclock funeral service on Friday, January 8, 2010.
