BROWNSVILLE, TX. - Noemi Torre entered into eternal rest on Friday, the 6th of December 2024 at South Texas Health System McAllen surrounded by her loving family. She was 74 years of age.
Noemi was born in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico on March 2, 1950, daughter of the late Eva de la Garza and Raul Torre.
As a teenager, Noemi assisted the elderly, beginning her nursing career at 16. She took interest in the medical profession from her grandfather, Dr. Raul Torre Repetto, after working with him from a young age at his office in Matamoros. She fell in love with the profession when she started nursing school in 1966 and assisted as a student at Hospital Ejidal, a hospital that provided medical care to rural communities. Her grandfather strongly encouraged her to become a doctor, however there was not a medical school in Matamoros at the time.
In 1971, Noemi moved to Brownsville where she continued to study nursing at Texas Southmost College and worked for Brownsville Medical Center as a nurse’s aide while also assisting in delivering babies. She became a licensed vocational nurse in 1973 and a registered nurse in 1982.
After years of practice, Noemi ventured into opening and operating her own business from scratch in 1991. She founded Caring for You Home Health, Inc., initially renting an office building in front of Washington Park until she purchased the historic Celaya-Creager House on Washington Street in Brownsville for the opening of her adult daycare business, Carino Adult Day Care. This provided a home-like atmosphere for the elderly guests in her care rather than having a commercialized feeling.
She was a devoted member of Palm Valley Church in Mission and enjoyed traveling, playing Rummikub. Noemi will be remembered as a humble, self-made woman whose love of nursing was the driving force in her successes.
Preceding Noemi in death were her parents, Eva de la Garza and Raul Torre; and her siblings Luis Torre de la Garza, Raul Torre de la Garza, and Jose Torre de la Garza.
Survivors include her loving children Gabriela Torre Reyes, Albert Torre, Jose M. De Leo, Jr., Christel Vasquez, and George Vasquez; her 22 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, nine siblings, and numerous nieces and nephews, and her beloved canine, Rita.
Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, the 11th of December 2024 between the hours of twelve noon and nine o’clock at night within the East Chapel of Darling-Mouser Funeral Home. A presentation ceremony by the Rio Grande Valley Nurse Honor Guard followed by a prayer service will begin at six o'clock in the evening,
Visiting hours will resume on Thursday, the 12th of December 2024 from nine o'clock in the morning with a chapel service to commence at two o'clock in the afternoon. Entombment will then follow, via an escorted procession, at Buena Vista Burial Park Mausoleum, 5 McDavitt Boulevard, Brownsville.
Honored to serve as her pallbearers will be her sons Albert N. Torre, Jose M. De Leo, Jr., and George R. Vasquez; her grandsons, Diego Sebastian Vasquez, Vladamir Alexander Torre, and Carlos Jose Chavez; and her brothers, Juan Carlos Torre and Miguel Angel Torre.
Honorary pallbearers are her grandsons Daniel Sebastian Torre, Francisco Javier Barajas, Christopher Scott Vasquez, George William Vasquez, Joseph Maximus De Leo, and Juan Manuel Barajas.
