BROWNSVILLE, TX. – Olga Gutierrez Gavito, our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend passed away peacefully on the evening of Wednesday, the 20th of December 2023 – her 94th birthday. She was surrounded by her loving daughters, son-in-law, and grandchildren at her home in Brownsville, Texas.
Olga was born to Antonio Cavazos Gutierrez and Isabel Gutierrez Gutierrez in La Paloma, Texas, on December 20, 1929, the youngest of their six children.
Olga wed Roberto Gavito on September 15, 1948, at the tender age of eighteen after meeting in high school. They resided in Brownsville, were the proud parents of four beautiful daughters, owned and managed a successful wholesale seafood business, and were pillars in their community. They were married for fifty-six years until Roberto’s passing on December 31, 2004.
Affectionately called “Momo” by her five grandchildren, Olga was known for her elegance, strength, wisdom, work ethic, faith, and quick wit. She prided herself on her community involvement serving as a contributing member of the West Brownsville Garden Club, the Pan American Round Table I, Learners Study Club, the Women’s Auxiliary to Mercy Hospital, and International 300. And she proudly speed-walked three miles every day!
Olga was survived by her four daughters Olga Leticia “Leti” Gavito, Maria Isabel “Beli” Gavito, Alicia G. Folacci, and Alma G. Russell; two sons-in-law, Michel Folacci and Ian Russell; five grandchildren Angela Calapa, PJ Calapa (Archana), Jacqueline Folacci, Dominique Folacci, and Marie-Noelle Folacci; and two great-grandchildren, Paul Kiran Calapa and Shayla Calapa; in addition to numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Preceding Olga in death was her husband, Roberto Gavito; her parents, Antonio Cavazos Gutierrez and Isabel Gutierrez Gutierrez; and five siblings Lilia G. Ramos, Hilda G. Dominguez, Virginia G. Triche, Antonio Gutierrez, and Elizabeth G. Williams.
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, the 28th of December 2023 between the hours of three o’clock in the afternoon and nine o'clock at night, with the recitation of the holy rosary to begin at seven o'clock Thursday evening within the East Chapel of Darling-Mouser Funeral Home.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at twelve noon on Friday, the 29th of December 2023 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 1914 Barnard Road, Brownsville. Interment will then follow, via an escorted procession, at Buena Vista Burial Park, 5 McDavitt Boulevard, Brownsville.
Honored to serve as her pallbearers will be Michel Folacci, Ian Russell, PJ Calapa, John Cowen, Dr. Jesus Ramos, Ruben Alfredo Martinez, Mauricio Esteban Martinez. Her nieces and nephews will serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family wishes to express their appreciation to her caregiver, Andrea; her nurses Hector, Aida, and Julie; and Gracia Hospice.
Momo, we will miss you, but we will find solace in the many memories, lessons, and laughter we shared. Rest in eternal peace.
