Peggy Louise Hays Copenhaver, 87, was born on October 18, 1925 in Brownsville, Texas to Hayden Orville Hays and Maude Ray Hays. After a long battle with breast cancer, she was able to spend her final days at home surrounded by her family, and she went home to Jesus on December 22, 2012.
Peggy was preceded in death by her parents three siblings, Gloria Butler, Evelyn Hudson, and Hayden Hays her husband, Kent Leroy Copenhaver and her son, Kent Leroy Copenhaver, Jr.
She is survived by her daughters, Karen Lee Pattillo of South Padre Island Cindy Copenhaver of Brownsville Dana Roberts of Austin Cary Sammy Montalvo of Brownsville and Laurie Lyle Wells of McKinney her grandchildren: Nancy Howard Mance, Pamela Pattillo, Sam Lesley Davila, Joshua Davila, Katelyn Benjamin Gonzalez, Erin Roberts, Leslie and Steven Montalvo, and Paige and Mitchell Wells greatgrandchildren, Joanna and Kyle Mance several nieces and nephews .
Born and raised in Brownsville, Peggy graduated from Brownsville High School in 1942 and married her high school sweetheart, Kent, in 1943. They owned and operated Kents ladies clothing. She finished an associates degree at Texas Southmost College while raising her family and working full time. She also worked for the Texas Employment Commission in later years. As a teen, Peggy was baptized at Central Christian Church where she remained an active member until her death. Other interests include the Brownsville Study Club, bridge clubs, and her childrens activities.
When Peggy retired, she became a world traveler and visited much of the USA, Mexico, Thailand, Panama Canal, Israel, Virgin Islands, and many European countries. While not traveling her hobbies were numerous. Her collections include decks of cards, eggs, kitchen gadgets, cookbooks, shells, and antiques. She maintained a beautiful yard made sure the birds were always fed, and delighted in watching the hummingbirds. She loved playing bridge, working jigsaw and crossword puzzles, watching Jeopardy, and reading. Peggy was a talented seamstress and artist, but her greatest talent and the one for which she was most wellknown was cooking. She always prepared a little bit of extra food in case Jesus Christ showed up for dinner. It is said the men who married Peggys daughters did so for HER cooking
The family expresses special thanks to Carlota Sanchez, Peggys longtime caregiver and friend their cousin, Carol Hudson, who has been available at all times to do whatever was needed Drs. Mark Cua, Balesh Sharma, and Beverly Zavaleta and Odyssey Hospice Care.
A visitation will be held at 1:00 p.m. and a Celebration of Life service at 2:00 p.m., on Thursday, December 27, 2012, at Central Christian Church, 1100 East Alton Gloor Blvd, Brownsville, Texas 78526. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Central Christian Church or to Sunshine Haven, 7105 West Lakeside Boulevard, Olmito, TX 78575.
