Petra Alvarez Farias was born on July 24, 1915, in Brownsville, Texas, third oldest of nine children. She was ninetyfive years old. She was known as the matriarch of the Alvarez family and was revered and respected by all who knew her.

Petras parents, Francisco Alvarez and Vicenta Gonzalez Alvarez opened La Union General Store at 13th and Tyler St. in the 1920s later the store was known as Alvarez Sons, with the family residing above the business. The residence and store now house the Good Neighbor Settlement House. Petra was proficient with financial transactions assisting her father with accounting. Up until recently, she would scan all sales receipts for their accuracy.

Petra was the loving and devoted wife of Daniel V. Farias, with whom she shared 58 years of marriage and who preceded her in death. She was the great woman behind the man. Together they shared a wonderful life with their daughters, Dora Luz Farias Cackley and Delia Farias Coy of Brownsville. Petras lifelong passion was her garden which was admired by all. Petra, a devout Catholic throughout her life was a parishioner of St. Marys Church.
