Roberto Gonzalez

Roberto Gonzalez, 60, our beloved brother, uncle, and friend entered into the glory of his eternal life on Monday, September 23, 2013, at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Brownsville.

Roberto grew up in El Ranchito, Texas, and attended Brownsville school. He graduated from Brownsville High School I n 1971. Roberto enlisted in the U.S. Army and served from July 1971 to July 1973, earning the rank of Specialist 4. His overseas tour was spent guarding the Berlin Wall. During his U. S. Army service, Roberto was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and was M16 Rifle Sharpshooter. Roberto was very proud of his military service.

Roberto loved adventure and held several hobs before he found his true calling. Roberto earned his BA degree in Education and taught middle school and high school English for the BISD. Roberto held a special love for literature and did his best to instill this love to all his students. Roberto led his students in UIL where they participated in LincolnDouglas debates, earning numerous awards. Roberto felt it was not about winning in competitions but challenging their minds.

Roberto was a skilled martial arts instructor, staring his own school, Shao Lin Kung Fu Academy, and was also an instructor in Tai Chi.

In 2002, Roberto suffered a major stroke which left him disabled. Roberto never lost his passion for English and was always a teacher at heart.
