Sgt. Roberto Cortez Mendez, 88, our beloved father, grandfather, brother and friend entered into the glory of his eternal life on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
Mr. Mendez was born and raised in Brownsville, Texas. He was a lifelong resident of Brownsville, Texas and served our great county in the United States Army during the Korean War. He then worked with and retired from the United States Army Corps of Engineers. Robert was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Mr. Mendez was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed by those fortunate to have known him.
Mr. Mendez was preceded in death by his wife, Esperanza Mendez; sons, Roberto Mendez Jr. and David Mendez; his grandchild Nicholas "Nico" Benavides; his mother Isabel Cortez Mendez, his father, Jose Mendez; his aunt, Maria "Tia" Villegas; and his siblings, John Joseph "JJ" Mendez, Elijio Mendez, Jose Enrique "Henry" Mendez, and Gloria Reedy.
Left behind to eternally treasure their memories of him are his children, Margie (Felipe) Beltran, Yvette (Juan) Rey, Monica (Rudy) Buitureira, Cesar (Nancy) Mendez, and Yolanda (Rafael) Leal; his grandchildren, Bobby Beltran, Miguel Rey, Rico (Amy) Benavidez, Vanessa Beltran, Erica Mendez, Ashley Mendez, Monique Rey, Alejandra Mendez, Brianna Buitureira, Carolina Mendez, Bianca Buitureira, and Cesar Daniel Mendez; four great-grandchildren, Brandon and Bradly Benavidez and Natalie Hope and Camila Rose Guerrero; and his siblings, Guillermo "Willie" Mendez, Margaret (Tex) Flaniken and Maria Josefina "Josephine" Wilson.
Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 9, 2017, with a rosary at 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening in the East Chapel of Darling-Mouser Funeral Home. We ask that everyone meet at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 555 W. St. Francis St. for the Funeral Mass which will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 10, 2017. The entombment of his cremated remains will be held after Mass in the Mausoleum at Buena Vista Burial Park. The VFW Honor Guard will be rendering military honors before the entombment.
Cesar Emilio Mendez, Felipe Beltran, Juan Rey, Rudy Buitureira, Miguel Rey, Rico Benavidez, and Bobby Beltran will be serving as honorary pallbearers.
