BROWNSVILLE, TX. – Rogelio "Roy" Alaniz passed away peacefully on Sunday, the 18th of February 2024, in the comfort of his home at the age of seventy-two.
He was born to Alberto and Elsie Garza Alaniz on October 18, 1951, in San Juan, Texas, where his love for family grew. He was a beloved educator known for his generosity, humor, and dedication to his family, friends, and former students.
In 1975, Roy pursued a career in education and devoted forty-six years to Brownsville Independent School District and thirty years to The University of Texas at Brownsville/Texas Southmost College combined. Roy was a strong advocate for personal health and wellness and was a dedicated member of the Texas Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (TAHPERD) for forty-seven years.
He married Sylvia P. Alaniz on February 17, 1977, and together, they built a beautiful legacy. He leaves behind a loving family: his wife of forty-seven years, Sylvia; children, Jonathan (Martina) Alaniz, Kevin (Dr. Daniel Soliz) Alaniz, Lizette P. (Luis) Rosales, and Lily P. (Charlie) Saldana; grandchildren, Isaac and Elizabeth Alaniz, Luis and Leonel Rosales, and Natalee and Hailee Saldana; and a host of relatives and friends who were blessed to have known him.
Rogelio was preceded in death by his parents, Alberto and Elsie Alaniz, and sisters, Noelia Alaniz and Veronica Martin. Roy is survived by his three siblings, Rosalinda (Rolando) Martinez, Alberto (Corina) Alaniz Jr., and David (Ani+) Alaniz.
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, the 22nd of February 2024 between the hours of four o’clock in the afternoon and nine o'clock at night, with the recitation of the holy rosary to begin at seven o'clock Thursday evening within the East Chapel of Darling-Mouser Funeral Home.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at ten o’clock in the morning on Friday, the 23rd of February 2024 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 555 W. St Francis Street, Brownsville. Interment will then follow, via an escorted procession, at Buena Vista Burial Park, 5 McDavitt Boulevard, Brownsville.
Honored to serve as his pallbearers will be Mario Reyna, Eli Escaname, Armando Garza, Alfonso Gutierrez, Jr., Luis Alonzo Rosales, and Leonel A. Rosales.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Dr. Daniel Soliz, Jr., Luis Rosales, Charlie Saldana, Dr. Antonio M. Diaz, Jr., Roger Rodriguez, Marty Urand, Adolfo Yanez, and Jesse Martinez.
Roy’s departure leaves a void that cannot be filled, but his spirit and shared memories will forever remain in our hearts.
