Rosemary Hardee Shiflet


Rosemary Hardee Shiflet entered into eternal rest Wednesday, June 25, 2008. She was born on Sept. 2, 1926 in Fernandina Beach, Florida, the daughter of Rosemary Humphreys and John Richardson Hardee. The HumphreysHardee families were pioneers in the shrimping industry and made their transition from Florida to Brownsville, Texas in the early 1950s.

Rosemary was a 1948 graduate of Randolph Macon Womans College in Lynchburg, Virginia. She then pursued graduate studies at Mills College in Oakland, California.

On November 14, 1959 Rosemary married Paul Wilson Shiflet.

In 1968, she and her husband established The Rosemary and Paul Shiflet Foundation. Their philanthropy benefited numerous charities that impacted educational endeavors and community enrichment.

Rosemary was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday school. She was also a member of the Wednesday Study Club. Rosemary enjoyed genealogy and spent her time researching her familys ancestry. She held memberships within a number of Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina historical societies. In 1984, she was recognized as a Notable Woman of Texas.

Rosemary was preceded in death by her parents and on May 26, 1994 by her beloved husband Paul.

She is survived by her brother John Richardson Hardee III and his wife Mary Virginia of St. Simons, Georgia; niece Mary Winfree Hardee, nephew John Richardson Hardee IV, and numerous cousins.

The family wishes to extend their sincerest appreciation and thanks to Janie Saldierna, her caregivers, and the staff at Golden Palms for their compassion and dedication to Rosemary.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, June 28 at 10:00 a.m. at Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito, Texas. Rev. Ed Robertson will officiate an 11:30 a.m. memorial service celebrating Rosemarys life at the First Presbyterian Church in Brownsville, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in memory of Rosemary Hardee Shiflet to the First Presbyterian Church, 435 Palm Blvd, Brownsville, Texas 78520.
