Ruben Barreda, 80, entered into eternal rest in the early morning hours of October 18, 2009. He was born to Alfredo and Avelina Barreda on November 2, 1928 in Brownsville, TX, and was the devoted husband of Blasa C. Barreda, all of whom preceded him in death. After the death of his mother in 1944, he looked after his brothers, Robert and Alfred. He served in the U.S. Army and fought in the Korean War with the 40th Infantry Division. After the war, he graduated from Pan American University and began his teaching career with the Brownsville Independent School District, where he worked at his lifes passion for nearly 38 years. At the time of his retirement, he was working as a counselor at Central Intermediate School.
Ruben was also a devoted grandfather and the caregiver of his grandson, Kristopher Alaniz, who preceded him in death in 1999. His brother Alfred B. McAllen and sister Teresa, who died in infancy, also preceded him in death
He is survived by his daughter Rosanna B. Rodriguez; granddaughter Raven Rodriguez, his brother Robert M. Barreda; his nephews Robert M. Barreda Jr., Rene L. Barreda Elizabeth, Mark McAllen, and Roman J. McAllen; his nieces, Belinda Gonzalez-Villarreal Joe, Michelle T. McAllen and Celeste M. Neathery Raymond; his fathers second wife, Ramona Barreda; and their children Robert Wills and Rosemary Wills, Gus, Albert, John, Ramiro, Raul, Antonio Barreda, and Alma Peterson. In the later years of his life, he was lovingly cared for by Mrs. Gisela Moreno, and her son Daniel Moreno. Their friendship filled his house with many laughs and constant companionship, and his family will always be grateful for the fellowship, compassion, and medical care she provided him.
Visitation will begin after 1:00 p.m. with a holy rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at Darling-Mouser Funeral Home East Chapel. The Mass of Resurrection will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday October 22, 2009 at Immaculate Conception Cathedral Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Buena Vista Burial Park
Agustin Lopez, Alfred Boyd, Robert Barreda, Jr., Rene Barreda, Roman McAllen, and Rick Medina are honored to be serving as Rubens pallbearers
Military honors will be conducted at the graveside by the VFW Post 2035 Honor Guard under the direction of Post commander Luis Lucio.
