After the death of his mother in 1944, he looked after his brothers, Robert and Alfred. He served in the U.S. Army and fought in the Korean War with the 40th Infantry Division. After the war, he graduated from Pan American University and began his teaching career with the Brownsville Independent School District, where he worked at his lifes passion for nearly 38 years. At the time of his retirement, he was working as a counselor at Central Intermediate School.

Ruben was also a devoted grandfather and the caregiver of his grandson, Kristopher Alaniz, who preceded him in death in 1999. His brother Alfred B. McAllen and sister Teresa, who died in infancy, also preceded him in death

He is survived by his daughter Rosanna B. Rodriguez; granddaughter Raven Rodriguez, his brother Robert M. Barreda; his nephews Robert M. Barreda Jr., Rene L. Barreda Elizabeth, Mark McAllen, and Roman J. McAllen; his nieces, Belinda Gonzalez-Villarreal Joe, Michelle T. McAllen and Celeste M. In the later years of his life, he was lovingly cared for by Mrs. Gisela Moreno, and her son Daniel Moreno. Their friendship filled his house with many laughs and constant companionship, and his family will always be grateful for the fellowship, compassion, and medical care she provided him.
