Sister Mary Celestine Pulido, 71, a Sister of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament, died in a local nursing home on November 29, 2007.
Sister Mary Celestine, born Maria de los Angeles on August 6, 1936, in Brownsville, Texas, was the daughter of Agapito M. and Maria Concepcion Mares Pulido. She spent her early years in Brownsville, where she graduated from Villa Maria High School in 1955. Entering Incarnate Word Convent, Corpus Christi, on August 15, 1955, Sister made her first profession of vows June 3, 1957, and professed perpetual vows August 14, 1960. She received her bachelors degree from St. Edwards University, Austin, and her masters degree from Texas A I University, Kingsville.
Her years of ministry included teaching at Cathedral School, Corpus Christi; Incarnate Word Academy, Brownsville; St. Theresas School, Corpus Christi; Our Lady Star of the Sea School, Port Isabel; Incarnate Word Academy, Corpus Christi; St. Gertrudes School, Kingsville; Villa Maria High School, Brownsville; Oscar Romero Junior High School, Corpus Christi, and Villa Maria Language Institute, Brownsville. Sister Celestine served as principal of Immaculate Conception School, Brownsville; Our Lady of Victory School, Beeville; and Sacred Heart School, Corpus Christi.
Sister Celestine held various positions in the Congregation of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament, including Sister-in-Charge of Incarnate Word Convent, Brownsville, membership on the Associate Team in Brownsville, and membership on various commissions. In January, 2007, Sister Celestine became co-director of Villa Maria Language Institute.
Sister is survived by three nieces: Ana Margot Pulido Rookstool and Angelica Maria Pulido of Brownsville, and Rosa Marlen Pulido Atkinson of San Antonio; two nephews: Agapito Xavier Pulido of Houston and Mario Joel Pulido of Cypress and numerous grand-nieces and nephews.
The Wake Service will be held 7:00 p.m. Friday, November 30, 2007, at Darling Mouser Funeral Home. Mass of Resurrection will be held at 2p.m., Saturday, December 1, 2007, at St. Mary Mother of the Church Parish, 1914 Barnard., Brownsville, Texas with burial to follow to Buena Vista Burial Park.
