Mrs. Sunshine R. Reed Van Holsbeke, 91, of Brownsville, our beloved Sister, Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, and Great-Great-Grandmother passed away peacefully on Nov. 29, 2017, in the comfort of her home in Brownsville, Texas.
Sunshine was born in 1926 into the "Pioneer" Reed Family the only daughter and sister to six brothers of Capt. Wallace L. Reed and Ada Egly Reed. She was a native and lifetime resident of Brownsville.
Sunshine was a devoted Catholic, housewife, great cook, spirited, and well known throughout Brownsville and loved by many. She did not drive but she drove the phone. She was a devoted wife and mother. Sunshine was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed not only by her family and friends but by all those fortunate to have known her.
Sunshine met and later married 2nd Lt. Leon Van Holsbeke while he was stationed at Ft. Brown, Brownsville, TX. They were married for 69 years. During this time, Sunshine and Leon, who was a career military officer and member of the U.S. Equestrian jumping tea, traveled with her family throughout Europe until he retired in 1962.
Sunshine was preceded in death by: her husband Leon; a son Mark; her parents, Wallace and Ada Reed; and 5 of her brothers, Wallace, Harold, Albert (WWII-POW), Forrest (WWII-Okinawa), and Howard Reed.
Sunshine is proudly survived by her brother, Roy E. Reed and his wife, JoAnne Glenn-Reed.
Left behind to eternally treasure their memories of her are her children: Ann Lee (Jim) Ralston, Leon (Kitty) Van Holsbeke Jr., and Melissa Van Holsbeke; 8 grandchildren: Jennifer (Mitchell) Sommer, Leon (Lisa) Van Holsbeke III, Reggie E. Van Holsbeke, Devin A. Van Holsbeke, Sunshine Tutt, Raven Johsnon, Marcus and Kathy Van Holsbeke and their mother, Lupita Van Holsbeke; 3 great-grandchildren: Amanda (Anthony) Stambaugh, Sidney Sommer, and Madison Van Holsbeke; and two great-great-grandchildren: Luke and Reed Stambaugh. Sunshine will also be missed by her sister-in-law, Cecilia "Sis" Reed along with her numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.
Visitation will begin at 4:00 p.m. and continue through 9:00 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 01, 2017, in the East Chapel at Darling-Mouser Funeral Home with the recitation of the Holy Rosary scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Friday evening at Darling-Mouser. The Funeral Mass is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 02, 2017, at St. Luke's Catholic Church, 2800 Rockwell Ave., Brownsville. Committal services will follow at Buena Vista Burial Park.
