After a valiant nine-month struggle against pancreatic cancer, Juan F. Trevio, Jr., 64, died at home on Saturday, September 12, 2009 surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Brownsville, Texas on November 28, 1944, the oldest child of Irma Zamudio Trevio and Juan Francisco Teco Trevio, Sr. He graduated from Brownsville High School in 1963 and from Texas A I University in Kingsville, TX with a Bachelors in Music Education. After in enlisting in the US Navy in 1968, Juan served his country as a medical corpsman in the U. S. Navy at Balboa Naval Hospital in San Diego and on the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk.
It was in California that he met the love of his life, Kathy Vernon, whom in married in May of 1969. Their marriage of over 40 years was blessed by three magnificent children: Carlos Trevio of Austin, TX, Elena Limroth of Greenville, SC, and Carolina Trevio of Austin, TX. He rejoiced at the addition to the family of their spouses Kyle Henry, John Limroth, and Daniel Burns and regarded his role as Dado to his three marvelous grandsons Antone and Ian Limroth, and Thomas Burns as his most important one.
Juan graduated from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Austin, TX in 1979 with a Masters of Divinity and was a faithful Minister of Word and Sacrament in the Presbyterian Church USA for over 30 years. He died having just completed his ninth year as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, Brownsville, Texas. He served other Texas churches as pastor in Del Rio, Palestine, McAllen, and Rockdale.
He also was a Chaplain and bible teacher at Presbyterian Pan American School in Kingsville, and a Campus Minister at University Presbyterian Church in Austin. In addition, he was an elementary and college music teacher, sixth grade classroom teacher, Christian Educator, spiritual guide and mentor, counselor, voice instructor, music consultant, vocalist, choir director, actor, poet, conference leader, gardener, artist, quilter, interior designer, runner, story and joke-teller, creative force for good, and faithful companion to countless friends, colleagues, and parishioners.
Juan was preceded in death by his father. Besides Kathy and their children, he is survived by his mother, Irma of Brownsville; his sisters: Cecilia Gilbert Saenz, Sylvia Carroll both from San Antonio, TX, and Cynthia Trevio of Brownsville; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family is most grateful to the staff of Odyssey Hospice, especially Susan, Vanessa, Helen, and Louise, and also to Dr. Francis Gumbel for their compassion and support.
A Memorial service in gratitude to God for Juans life and in Witness to the Resurrection will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 16, 2009, at First Presbyterian Church, 435 Palm Blvd., Brownsville, Texas 78520 and 956 542-3564.
In lieu of flowers, it was Juans desire for memorial gifts to be sent to First Presbyterian Church, attn: Operating Fund; or Su Casa de Esperanza, P.O. Box 1333, Pharr, TX 78577-1333.
Juan loved the Lord and served God with all his desire, creativity, energy, and courage. He sought to love his neighbor and himself all his days and worked tirelessly for peace and justice for all people. We give all thanks to God for his life and witness.
