Vivian Kailbourn Ostos, 96, died at her home in Brownsville, on Tuesday, April 29, 2008.
Vivian is survived by her husband, Richard Lee Ostos, Sr. of Brownsville, two daughters, Patricia Cheshire-Murray Jab of Corpus Christi and Anne McCumber Brad of Brownsville; three sons, Richard L. Ostos, Jr. Crystal of Arroyo City, Daniel A. Ostos Sylvia of Kerrville, and Robert A. Ostos Nancy of Laguna Vista; three brothers, Erland Kailbourn and Ray Kailbourn of Wellsville, New York, and Lloyd Kailbourn of Whitesville, New York; thirteen grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Vivian was born in Renovo, Pennsylvania on October 9, 1911. She moved with her parents to Wellsville, NY in 1929. She graduated from high school in Emporium, Pa and went to work for the Wellsville Daily Reporter. It was there that she met Richard Lee Ostos, originally of Wellsville but whose home was in Monterrey, Mexico. They were married in 1933, and immediately moved to Monterrey. In 1934, after the birth of their first child, they moved to Brownsville. In 1940, now with two children, Vivian moved back to Wellsville to await the birth of her third child while her husband went to San Juan, Puerto Rico to get settled in his new job with a steamship company there. Vivian and the three children followed him down in October of 1940. Several years later a fourth child was born in San Juan and at the end of World War II, the family returned to Brownsville where her husband started his own business, DIX Shipping Co. A fifth child was born in 1955. Being a wife and mother was a full time job and occupied all of Vivians time.
Vivian was a devoted wife and mother, who enjoyed fishing and camping alongside her husband, children, and friends as well as traveling, cooking, and entertaining guest at home.
She will be sorely missed by her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorials be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 435 Palm Blvd., Brownsville, Texas 78520.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 2, 2008 at 4p.m., at the First Presbyterian Church.
