Zulema Cardenas Reyes, 68, our beloved mother, grandmother, and sister died peacefully on August 8, 2013 in Ames, Iowa. Zulema was born in Matamoros, Mexico the daughter of Maria G. Cardenas and Melchor Cardenas. Zulema graduated from Brownsville High School in 1966.
In 1971, Zulema married Hilario Rodrigo Reyes, and soon after they travelled throughout Mexico for many years. Zulema worked diligently for the B.I.S.D. in various positions for 19 years. After retirement, Zulema, lovingly, continued to serve children as a foster parent.
Zulema was passionate about her Hispanic heritage and showed it through her love of storytelling, gardening, cooking, and crafting. She reveled in passing down family traditions to her three children and their families.
Zulema is survived by her two brothers, Adalberto Isabel Cardenas and Everardo Robles her daughters, Zulema John Thomas of Ames, Iowa and Zoraida Andy Najera of Brownsville, Texas and one son, Rodrigo Monica Reyes of Brownsville, Texas seven grandchildren and a number of other relatives and close friends.
Viewing will begin at 3:00 p.m. and continue through 9:00 p.m. on Friday, August 16, 2013 with the family receiving friends starting at 6:00 p.m. A prayer service is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Friday evening. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 17, 2013 in the East Chapel at DarlingMouser Funeral Home. Committal services will follow at Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens.
